Automated Disk Media Production System

Engineered and designed a unique automated machine for high volume coating of memory disk media.

Disk blanks are contained within a vacuum-sealed cylindrical transportation canister with up to 50 disks. These canisters are transferred to a loading position at the machine. Upon signal the canister is lifted into a sealed chamber. Disks are then robotically moved from the cannister one at a time and placed on a moving conveyorized system and taken through the deposition process. Finally disks are transferred into another vacuum sealed cannister again for shipping.

The system was capable of processing at the rate of 200 disks/hour.

PCB Procurement

Retained by a major U.K. company to locate a U.S.A. manufacturer for production of PCB Assemblies to be valued at $2,000.000.00. The reason was that no satisfactory supplier could be found within the U.K. that could deliver the combination of: Quality, Delivery, Customization, Design and Price required.

When the manufacturer was contracted, Precision Research was undertook the responsibility as the U.S.A. quality control source and made weekly inspection visits with production and statistical reports for the client.

Robotic Disk Handling

Contracted by a leading manufacturer of disk media testing equipment to determine the viability of supplying robotic capabilities. Precision Research performed the following tasks:

First to conduct an extensive market survey of disk manufacturers to validate need and opportunity. Then to draft specifications for the robotic requirements. Evaluate existing U.S.A. robotic systems integrators as potential sub-contractors. Create a full business plan to establish a robotic production manufacturing and sales division. Designed and developed the robotic machines for the client after determining not to use existing systems or systems integrators.

PCB Spray Coating

Designed an automated PBC Spray Coating system and guided production of first production unit in 4 1/2 months. The system transfers PCB's from a loading position into an enclosure. A spray system above the PCB, then moves rapidly via an X-Y positioning system to apply coating as determined by computer program control. The PCB is then advanced to another station and rotated to the upside down position for coating of the opposite side. Finally the PCB is advanced to an unloading position.

The system is capable of processing at the rate of 60 PBC's/hour.
